Key Factors That Can Influence Management Styles Management Essay

Key Factors That Can Influence Management Styles Management Essay The executives is depicted as what administrators ought to do and what they have to do Cole, 2004. Great administration keep individuals roused, engaged and beneficial since indiscreet demeanor are not allowed to pardon by clients (Daft, 2010). Administrators need to control the organization before realizing how to deal with different circumstances by utilizing diverse administration styles. It is acknowledged that each style has its own highlights and when applied it will have various impacts in various societies. Accordingly, it made a noteworthy influence when utilize the most proper administration styles at the most suitable time. Quickly, the paper is worried about distinguishing and talking about certain variables that impact the executives styles, which will be incredibly useful for individuals particularly directors to perceive the significance of the board. Specialists characterized that administration styles can be partitioned into three sections. The most well-known utilized in business are: Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez-faire the executives styles (Vugt et al, 2004). Imperious is portrayed as a style that lacking of popular government and chose by business visionaries. Equitable style is by all accounts essentially turned around from Autocratic style, chiefs and laborers are equivalent and representatives are increasingly satisfied and unassumingly to acknowledge conclusions by businesses. Moreover, directors work by rules. In this way, Democratic style become the most well known styles that acknowledged by people (Yuan and Yi, 2010). Also, for Laissez-faire the board styles, laborers are opportunity and chiefs are allowed to settle on a choice (Vugt et al, 2004). The paper will in general primarily center around this three administration styles on the grounds that these styles are picks by supervisors to control the venture in a l ot of societies. Subsequent to understanding the meaning of the board styles, make sense of the elements would be an imperative advance. It is realized that one key factor consistently impacts one culture. Culture is comparative with a gathering of individuals who has uncommon qualities in work place. The individual conduct is emphatically impacted by the neighborhood culture. What's more, there is something that directors ought to be mindfulness so as to make a fruitful organization and truly comprehend diverse administration styles. The remainder of the article will contrast and the administration styles in Norway, China and Japan and portray how unique administration styles impact in these nations. China is viewed as a run of the mill high-setting society nation which included social and social conditions and have a significantly sway on correspondence (Laroche 2003 refered to in Hestflatt 2005). Interfacing in this sort of business to China, the association place, including condition, it is mindfulness that administration is significant and supportive to manufacture the effective connection among representatives and managers. Chinese want to utilize a casual method to impart and show signs of improvement comprehension of the partner. For instance, welcoming partners to café, sending blessings to partners and playing together in private home or open diversion places are consistently a system to discuss the business and fortify the connection between one another. Attributable to this sort of culture in China, in the administration of China, the administrator settles on choices by considering the gatherings sake in power and the lower laborers have no helpful techniques to show their suppositions. This dynamic procedure is chain of command with intuition themselves is the most significant, the partner is the second (Hestflatt, 2005). All in all, China center around Autocratic and Bureaucratic administration styles, it implies that collectivistic reasoning is viewed as inescapable and difficult to change, administrators are the pioneers who settle on the choice. In correlation, Norway delegate a sort of low-setting society which included social and social conditions, and it impact situation (Laroche 2003 refered to in Hestflatt 2005). In spite of the fact that individuals depend on specific information and association between them, it works when people settle on choices by utilizing their own thoughts rather than insignificant messages. Norwegians like to work by rules (Hooker 2003 refered to in Hestflatt 2005). An a valid example is that in 1980s Norway, the board were absence of dictatorship which intelligent strikes in laborers (Hestflatt, 2005). Subsequently, it amazingly changed the workplace in that ages and everybody battled for their privileges. Just as this showed in the administration procedure of Norway, directors center around collaboration and agreement techniques to settle on a choice. Consequently, the idea of Democratic slowly changes into Norway and is significantly acknowledged by individuals (Hestflatt, 2005). Contrasted Chinese administration styles and Norway, pioneers in Automatic styles settled on choices when appended to their advantages, Chinese chiefs are an a valid example. On the other hand, as Vugt et al(2004) states that pioneers of Democratic style will settle on choices and helpful with bunch individuals by utilizing rules. Thus, Democratic style pioneers improve the exhibition of workers superior to the next one. Despite the fact that China utilize Automatic style, in any case, it is impressively suitable for China. As we known, China is a nation represented by gathering and government, if Chinese administration styles separate from its national conditions as opposed to utilizing Democratic style, choices would not coordinate the appropriate procedure of the organization and its economy could be diminished. Another culture is Japanese, a nation which is close to China yet has entirely unexpected societies. Culpan (1993) focused on that Japanese organizations are viewed as the universes best ones on the planet markets, and the agreeable connection among supervisors and laborers help its prosperity. A case of this is a specialist utilizes a seven S model to clarify that the worry in staff is one of the most essential styles which make Japanese organizations for the most part use. Comparability, its viable on objectives are reasonable for organizations (Culpan,1993). Accordingly, it tends to be seen that the administration style in Japan is Laissez-faire. Therefore, focusing on the significance of human asset the board which including ceaselessly correspondence among workers and managers make a huge to set objectives in Japan. Contrasting and every one of the three societies which are China, Norway and Japanese, two of them are center around the significance of authority and Japanese focus on objectives. Indeed, utilizing amicable kind of human asset the executives mode isn't just advantages the administration measures, yet in addition increasingly successful to advance the venture culture. In this manner, totally unique administration styles which including Democratic and Laissez-faire are properly for free enterprise. On the other hand, it tends to be foresee that Autocratic is appropriate for socialism. In the event that utilizing the executives procedure just by regard or anticipate the way of life, it would gain out of power by taking administration measures and utilization of the administration devices in big business in an unexpected way. Along these lines, staffs may diverse to perceive the objective and measure the powerful usage. Additionally the executives execution will seem counterfeit obstruc tion and the board exertion will take an enormously markdown. Clearly the administration styles among the three nations are totally extraordinary and the components impacted them are different. Be that as it may, social contrasts are the most fundamental variables affected the administration style and one factor suit for just a single administration style. The data about the business culture of every nation is indispensable for the organizations and people to be achievement. Truly, with the advancement of globalization, the pattern of the board style in every nation has a few likenesses and ingests the advantages of different nations. Nonetheless, it isn't allowed to totally apply distinctive administration styles to its own way of life since it isn't permitted by national circumstances. Along these lines, consolidate diverse administration styles with its own societies are elective techniques to take care of the issue. Words: 1222

The Average Student - Free Essay Example

Do you want to spend 20 years of your life paying off your student loans? If you could have a chance to pay for college with cash, would you take it? If you save up the money throughout your life, you can be debt free and making profit after you graduate from college. Its the perfect alternative due to the fact that you wont be in debt, and youll have money to use for important events and even the small things that you want in life. The average student loan debt for the class of 2017 is $39,000. There are endless reasons as to why student loans can hinder your life goals. For example, are you thinking about going to graduate school? The average undergraduate accumulates over $30,000 in student loans, therefore not being able to take out another large loan for the next step in their education. This debt will be following you around like a cloud above your head if you dont pay it off. It doesnt just disappear from your life, itll stay there until youve paid every single dollar off. One of the most important reasons to think about not taking out student loans is the fact that interest rates may be extremely high. Interest rates on student loans are much higher than most other types of loans. Most of the interest rates vary between 5 and 6%, with private loans ranging from 2.5%-12%. Thats three times the rate of the average mortgage, and close to the average credit card. According to Nikelle Murphy, Federal student loans are now capped with fixed rates, which takes some of the guesswork out of how much youll actually be paying. However, the annual percentage can still change from year to year. What this means is that the loans you take out during your senior year of college could still have a higher interest rate than the money you borrowed freshman year. (Murphy). As a college student, its hard to find a well paying job while trying to study and get an education, so it is very unlikely that youll be able to pay off the loan before the interest rates start rising. Although, it can be threatening to your financial situation, many believe that student loan debt is a good type of debt. Because of the fact that you are using the money wisely to acquire an education, most people who side with this aspect find the money worth it. You also learn how to pay off loans, which should be a good skill to have, just in case you ever have a situation in life when you need to. Being able to pay off your student loans on time can actually raise your credit score as well, therefore making you look like a responsible borrower according to the lenders. In conclusion, debt is never a way to have money disappear. Itll stay with you until you pay it off. College loans are one of the biggest loans that youll have to pay off throughout your lifetime if you choose to go down that path. By saving up for college with cash, youll have more freedom in your financial situations because there wont be any debt hanging over your shoulder. Porphyrias lover Essay Example For Students

Porphyrias lover Essay Romantic writers often held interesting philosophies of sexuality. On one hand, they were taught to believe that sensual things were sinful, while on the other hand, they were constantly confronted with sexuality in everyday life. Robert Browning is one of the most renowned Romantic poets who often explored the issue of sexuality. In his dramatic poem Porphyrias Lover Browning demonstrates a malicious intertwining of violence, morals, masculinity, and sexuality. His use of setting, gender roles, and transgression illustrate this point. Romanticism is partially characterized by its longing to return to a leisurely, peaceful, private era in which society is not confined in an urban setting. In the beginning of the poem, the setting is perfectly romantic: a cottage by a lake, a roaring storm, and perfect seclusion. As the depiction of the setting is complete, Porphyria enters, soiled from the storm. The woman comes from the woods, having escaped from a party to see her lover. Here, Brow ning is equating the woman to nature. The two are traditionally compared to one another for their purity and beauty. This sets the model for what a woman should be. When Porphyria comes to see her lover, she is concerned with physical intimacy. First she performed a nineteenth century striptease for her lover:Withdrew the dripping cloak and shawl, And laid her soild gloves by, untiedHer hat and let the damp hair fall. Porphyria is taunting her lover. First taking off wet clothes, then removing her gloves (a very unladylike thing to do); Porphyria is seducing the narrator. The unwed woman then lets her hair fall in front of a man. This would be the modern day equivalent to a woman taking her shirt off in public. Porphyria then tries to physically entice him to come to her. After no reply, she goes to him and touches his waist and bears her shoulder to the narrator. He is overcome with emotion, and wants the moment to last forever. In the time this poem was written, this overt sexuali ty was shocking and immoral. Good girls were not supposed to be sexual beings or have sexual feelings, but here we see a female pursuing a male. As opposed to the image of Porphyria as an innocent seductress, the narrator portrays himself as very masculine and sexist. He speaks of possessing Porphyria, how she worshiped him and how she would give herself to him forever. The narrator says that he is very proud of all these things. These statements show that the narrator possesses some very sexist ideas. The narrator obviously has an odd, possibly forbidden relationship with her. Porphyria comes from a rich family, and cannot formally wed her lover. She sneaked away from a gay feast during a storm. She is Too weak, for all her hearts endeavor/To set her struggling passion free/From pride, and vainer tiesThese vainer ties represent her family and money. In the narrators mind, Porphyria is selfish, not willing to marry below her class. In this case, it is thought that a woman should mar ry below her class in the name of love. However, Porphyria turns the tables on the narrator, goes against the sexual standard, and insists on a purely sexual relationship. The narrator is obviously slighted by her disdain for his social position. He is a man, and should have what he wants; in his mind, he deserves her. He is a man who cannot have what he wants; therefore it is justifiable that he does anything, even murder, to get it. His transgressions are justified through his right to sexual conquest. For want of deserves yet cannot have, the man moves to violence. A critic of Browning, Barbara Melchiori, asserts that by killing Porphyria, the narrator preserves her purity and his own. This cannot be the reason behind her murder. The narrator did indeed love Porphyria, but she constantly controls the relationship. She is the one who had to sneak away to see him. She is the one who will not pursue their relationship outside of his poor cottage. The man would not tolerate this domin ance by a female, yet he is desperate to save their time together. Therefore, he murders his lover. Or perhaps one would say .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a , .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .postImageUrl , .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a , .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:hover , .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:visited , .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:active { border:0!important; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:active , .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u86995766b5c767dc77e10e06ba3b5c1a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Atkins Diet Vs. The L - it means people Review Paper Essay on The L - it means people Good day, young listener. In the description of the book I was pleased, really pleased with the phrase: Sergei Lukyanenko name, which for all true connoisseurs of Russian fiction needs no commentary, no view name that speaks for itself.. But in order not to deceive those who are just beginning familiarity with Russian fiction, I thought, would Chesney write a review of this book. Communication Process Paper Essay Example

Communication Process Paper Essay Example Communication Process Paper Essay Communication Process Paper Essay Communication is important within all organizations, therefore an organizations communication process may be unique to that organization. Discussion includes the communication climate of Upshaw Processing as a whole. In addition, discussion includes the strengths and weaknesses of Upshaw’s communication. Discussion includes the contributions of management, supervisors, and employees that include an effective communication process. In addition, discussion includes an example that supports the communication process. Communication Climate The communication climate in Upshaw Processing may be formal or informal, depending on the employees working. Upshaw Processing is a small family business; therefore, most of the employees are family members except during deer season when non-family employees work. The use of informal channels of communication occurs during off-season when workers include family members, whereas during deer season, formal channels of communication occur when workers include non-family members. Formal channels are established by the organization and transmit messages that are related to the professional activities of the members† (Robbins Judge, 2009, p. 353). â€Å"Informal channels are spontaneous and emerge as a response to individual choices† (Robbins Judge, 2009, p. 353). Strengths of Communication The communication at Upshaw Processing may reach a high level of success before and during deer season. During deer season many customers visit the processing business, therefore communication is important for the success of the business. Lack of communication during deer season may cause confusion with the customers, employees, and owners. Communication is important because during deer season the activity increases to a high level. Employees are helping customers who are dropping off a deer for processing, employees are helping customers who are picking up a deer, and employees are helping to process other deer. The use of formal channel communication is important during deer season because of the high level of activity, otherwise a customer may pick up the wrong deer. Weaknesses of Communication Although communication levels are strong at Upshaw Processing, at times a weakness in communication may appear. Noise may cause a weakness in communication, whereas the employee may not understand the instructions from the supervisor. The weakness in communication may cause the loss of customers and money for the business. By using the Wheel of formal communication, Upshaw Processing weeds out the weaknesses in communication, otherwise the success of the business would be at risk. By weeding out the weakness in communication, the owners of Upshaw Processing are guaranteeing the success of the business. Effective Communication Of the Three Common Small-Group Networks, the use of the Wheel works for the processing business, therefore the owner relays messages to all employees. The use of the Wheel Network insures that all employees receive and understand the message from the start. Communication during the off-season is successful because employees are family members and know the job details for success. Long time employees learn to read the nonverbal actions of the owners and other employees, therefore spoken words may not occur for the communication to be successful. Example of Support An example of support for the communication climate within the processing business; employees are working and a customer comes in to pick up a deer, a certain employee will wash and wait on the customer. The employee returns to the owner to see what tub number holds the customers deer, and then retrieves the deer from the freezer. The employee collects the money for the processing fee and hands the money to the owner. The owner instructs a certain employee on the conduction of the collection process, therefore the action of communication of collection is successful. In addition to the above example, the owners instruct skinning room employees on the deer skinning process. Clear communication is important in the deer skinning process for the safety of the employees. Deer skinning involves the use of sharp knives, therefore an employee must understand the deer skinning process to work that area of the business. Conclusion The success of an organization requires communication, whereas each organization may practice a different type of communication process. Discussion includes information concerning the communication climate at Upshaw Processing. In addition, discussion includes the strengths and weaknesses of communication within Upshaw Processing. Discussion includes the effective communication process of the supervisor, manager, and employees. In conclusion, discussion includes an example that supports the communication process. Biblical Reference For the Catholic Mass Term Paper

Biblical Reference For the Catholic Mass - Term Paper Example The history of Christianity is a testimony justifying that fact, as the Catholic Mass has been the same way since the time of the Apostles and the first Christians. Sources opine the Mass as an interesting call as it links Christians to God in the flesh when they go in front for the Holy Communion1. This paper will give a biblical reference for the Catholic Mass. The Catholic Mass involves a ceremony, incense, and golden chalices. The early Christians were men of culture and time. They held ceremonial events because they were descendants of this style of worship. Later, Christians inherited these styles through organic and natural means from their Jewish origins. Before the Constantine legalized Christianity in Certa, Christians used inventories besides the Scriptures. According to the written inventories, Christians used a number of inventories, which included two golden chalices, six silver dishes, six silver chalices, seven silver lamps, and  a silver bowl. This was indeed a cer emony! The Bible tells us that Noah prepared burnt offering whereby the scriptures establish that the â€Å"odor delighted the Lord† (Gen 8:21)2. This indicates that Catholic Mass has Biblical reference. Most Christians know about the Law of Moses, but remarkably few understand its link to Catholic Mass. A closer outlook shows that God did not come to pick the faithful or abolish the law but rather fulfill it. (Mat 5:17). Facts about the Law of Moses show that it had a heap of vestments and ceremonies involved in it. Jesus liked teaching in temples. In fact, He loved it and named it â€Å"My Father’s House† (Luke 2:49 and John 2:16). This shows that Jesus was into ceremony and even the Heaven talks about a ceremony. In Rev 5:8, twenty-four elders floored in front of the lamb, and they all held golden bowls filled with incense and a harp. The book of Revelation reveals that an angel who appeared in golden censer and stood in front of the altar. This angel receive d a large quantity of incense during prayers  at the altar (Rev 8:3). With reference to the Bible, these are some of the reasons as to why Catholics uphold the spirit of ceremonies. In fact, Book of Revelation gives a description with regard to the Catholic Mass. Revelation gives a lot of emphasis and spiritual attachment to the holy Mass. Catholic Church regards Mass as proper and authentic sacrifice, which is the same as Holy Communion. Anglican churches also offer Mass as proper sacrifice to God. In many churches, the sacrifice of Mass starts with thanking the Lord. In this first part of the Mass, Anglicans give thanks to God because of His blessings, which He has bestowed upon them. The second part of the mass according to Anglican Church entails repenting of sins. Christians plead to the Lord to pardon their sins and purify them in order to offer true and clean sacrifice. Lastly, Anglicans offer themselves as a sacrifice to the Lord who created all the creatures in the earth. Christians participate in celebration of Holy Communion in this part of the Mass. This is what Christians call the Eucharistic sacrifice. Eucharistic sacrifice is the true blood and body of Jesus Christ. There is a contention among churches over the sacrifice of Eucharist. Churches have differed over forms of celebrating this sacrifice. For instance, Catholics have a varied form of offering their Mass. There are many scriptural proofs regarding Mass in Old and New Testaments. Melchisedech and Jesus Christ in the last supper are examples

Kottak presents the concept of the feminization of poverty Essay

Kottak presents the concept of the feminization of poverty - Essay Example These include (1) the growth and emergence of female/women-headed households, (2) inequalities between households and discrimination against girls and women and, and (3) economic policies that lean heavily towards neo-liberalism, including structural changes and transitions in post-socialist markets (Kottak 82). Kottak argues that increasing visibility of poverty among women is deeply rooted in political economies, cultural trends and demographic patterns. He states that there are huge regional variations in the financial and economic status of women-headed households, and this is primarily influenced by women’s access to property and employment, political regimes and social policies. Kottak also states that inequalities between households have been found to worsen the state of women’s rights in terms of their vulnerability (105). This manifests in form of inequalities in resource allocation to households and a lack of decision-making in important spheres like legal codes, public policy and development. Inadequate access to property rights (in land), employment, illiteracy, poor wages, childbearing, early marriages have also proved detrimental to the empowerment of women and the realization of their rights. The expansion of female/women-headed households has been found to be influential in the exacerbation of women’s poverty, and although this has not been proved in most parts of the world, the United States offers a stark example of what may eventually be the situation in a majority of countries. In the US, feminization of poverty is closely linked to the growth of female-headed households especially among low-income females in terms of insufficien t social support (Kottak 74) It has been established that neoliberal economic policies have a tendency and potential to induce poverty and hence have adverse effects on girls and women.

The Odyssey by Homer Essay Example for Free

The Odyssey by Homer Essay In the morning, Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arete, goes with her friends to the river with the laundry and begins to wash and play games. Odysseus wakes up by their noise and, covered in salt and covering up his private parts with a leaf, travels to them. Nausicaas friends run away screaming but Nausicaa stays to listen to what the stranger has to say. Fearing that he may scare her if her were to grab her knees in supplication, Odysseus pleads with her at a distance. Nausicaa respects Odysseus and his fine words and thought and gets her friends to bathe him in the river and to clothe him. In the process, Athene divinely enhances his appearance so that he looks quite like a god. The fact that Nausicaa, without her maidservants and veil the two things that protect her person and reputation in public stays to talk to Odysseus shows her spirit and sturdiness of character. Fearing gossip, Nausicaa tells Odysseus, after inviting him to the palace to meet her parents, to wait in the grove. While there, Odysseus prays to Athene to aid him in his supplication to the king and queen. Book 6 contains an element, which although not scarce in the Odyssey, is certainly very rare in most epic poem: comedy. The comic element is unmistakeable in these scenes. Odysseus embarrassment when making his approach to the girls and right before bathing, as well as the girls terrified reactions to his nakedness, cannot help but elicit a lighter mood in the poems action, which until now had centered solely on the horrible problems faced by Odysseus and his family. Homer uses a simile to describe Odysseus as a lion (used in war situation in the Iliad which demonstrates, in this non-warfare situation that the girls viewed Odysseus as a dangerous and wild beast) and Nausicaa and the other girls as sheep. Here, the ravenous lion, buffeted by the elements but striving onward to state his all-consuming hunger on helpless sheep, is compared to the salt-covered Odysseus, ragged from days at sea, and filled with a hunger of an entirely different nature. The relation of the sheep to the girls can be seen clearly in retrospect when the girls flee before this ominous figure of male sexuality as sheep would flee before a hungry lion. This simile does not serve merely to make us once again pity the poor, travel-beaten Odysseus; it is rather an attempt to lighten the tension filling much of the first five books. BOOK 7 W HEN NAUSICAA AND HER FRIENDS HAD REACHED THE PALACE, Athene, disguised as a young girl, offers to lead Odysseus to the palace and places a magical mist around him rendering him invisible in order to evade rude questioning. Athene tell him that in order to speak to King Alcinous, he must first win favour with Queen Arete. When they reach the palace, Athene leaves and buggers off to Athens. Odysseus admires the fine palace then enters, sees Arete and grabs her knees in supplication. She allows him to see the king, who after removing one of his sons off of a chair so that Odysseus doesnt have to sit in the ash, feats with them and tells them the story of how he came to Phaeacia. The queen notices his Phaeacian clothes and Odysseus tells them about their daughters generosity. As they admire Odysseus and Nausicaa ha refused all other suitors, Alcinous hints at marriage but Odysseus stresses that he wants to go home. He is therefore promised their magic ships to sail home by. The ships can reach any destination and return in a day. Arete and the servants then prepare a bed for Odysseus and sleeps. In Book 7, we see the epitome of a motif that runs throughout the Odyssey: the relationship of host to guest. We saw the kind treatment Telemachus bestowed on Athene when was disguised as Mentes as well as the great hospitality extended to Telemachus by both Nestor and Menelaus. Now it is Odysseus himself who comes as a stranger to a foreign court and must act accordingly. Indeed, the role of a foreign visitor is one that Odysseus knows well, for he has wandered long and far and knows the customary courtesies expected by guests. Contrasted with his seasoned guest, Alcinous, although kind and benevolent as a host, is unused to receiving guests, and is initially unsure of how to react to Odysseus suit. After Odysseus has humbled himself by sitting in a heap of ashes, no one, including Alcinous, knows quite how to act. Finally, an elder named Echeneus, the oldest man of Phaeacia speaks. Echeneus tactfully reminds Alcinous of his duties as a host to a stranger. Once again, it is not Alcinous social grace and magnanimity that is lacking; it is his inexperience with situations of this sort that temporarily holds him back from action. We are also given insight into another motif of the poem: the nature of divine disguise. Alcinous suggests that Odysseus might be a god who has come to test the Phaeacians benevolence towards guests. We have already been told of the gods special love for the Phaeacians, and how the people of Phaeacia themselves are nearly divine. Now we lean that the gods manifest that love by appearing to them not disguised, but in their actual form. This gives us an indication of just how strongly Athene loves Odysseus, for she often converses with him in her pure, undistinguished form. But it is not until Odysseus once again reaches Ithaca that she will be able to do so without fear of Poseidons wrath. Homer, by mixing in some elements of magic (the forever ripe fruit and semi-divine Phaeacians) prepares the reader for the fantasy books. BOOK 17 T ELEMACHUS LEAVES EUMAEUS HUT AND GOES HOME AND IS WARMLY greeted by Eurycleia, maidservants and his mother, Penelope. He tells her to go and pray to the gods while he meets Theclymenus the seer and Peiraeus in the place of assembly. There he tells Peiraeus to hold onto his Spartan treasure until after the conflict with the suitors. Theoclymenus and Telemachus then return to the palace where Theoclymenus reveals a prophecy of Odysseus already being in the city to Penelope over dinner. Odysseus and Eumaeus then head off into the city and meet the traitorous Melanthius who both physically and verbally abuses Odysseus who manages who his peace while Eumaeus tells him off. Unshaken, the goatherd goes off into the palace. Then, as they approach the palace themselves, they see Odysseus old dog Argus is dying on top of dung. The dog wags his tail as he recognises his master after twenty years of separation and then dies. In the palace, Telemachus gives Odysseus a meal and then Athene commands Telemachus disguised father to beg from the suitors. Antinous, who was slightly provoked by Odysseus beggar, throws a footstool at him and Odysseus walks off bitterly and silently. The fact that Antinous did this, and was corrected and doomed by the other suitors, shows that he has no respect for Xenia. Penelope then decides that she wishes to speak to Odysseus as the beggar. Eumaeus, however, tries to dissuade her from this as she has heard so many false tales from men who have falsely claimed to have met Odysseus. Still, she wants to see him. But Odysseus only wants to see her after the suitors have left. She agrees and Eumaeus goes home but is asked by Telemachus to come back to the palace in the morning. Now that Odysseus has appeared before the larger Ithacan community in disguise, there is more room for the dramatic irony that fills many of the verses of The Odyssey. We see this notably during the Melanthius episode. Although Odysseus holds his peace after Melanthius attack, Eumaeus calls upon the gods to return Odysseus to his home so that he can punish the scornful goatherd. Melanthius, a loyal follower of the suitors, knows the power that will be his when Telemachus is eliminated. His own vow, of course, recoils back upon him. Melanthius wishes that Telemachus may suffer death as surely as Odysseus himself has already done so. The irony lies in the fact that Melanthius vow is fulfilled, only not in the way he had intended. Odysseus himself has not died, and is in fact standing right there. Therefore, as surely as Odysseus has not died, so too will Telemachus not die. Melanthius has unwittingly stated the truth. We see a similar use of irony later, after Antinous strikes Odysseus with the footstool. Only this time, no one specifically mentions the long-lost Odysseus. Instead the suitors remark that Antinous did badly to strike the beggar as he could have been a god testing the suitors kindness. Of course, we know Odysseus is not a god. But the gods have indeed disguised him fir the very reason that the suitors suggest: to test them and to see which are righteous and which are malevolent. It is also appropriate that Odysseus disguise makes others liken him once more to a god. Yet this time the situation is reversed. Before, Telemachus thought Odysseus a god for removing his disguise. Now, the suitors consider the possibility due to the lowly appearance of the disguise itself, not because of the majesty with which the gods envelop him when he stands revealed in his true form.

ABC Manufacturing Company Essay

The ABC Manufacturing Company is a metal working plant under the direction of a plant manager who is known as a strict disciplinarian. One day a foreman noticed Bhola, one of the workers, at the time-clock punching out two cards his own and the card of Nathu, a fellow worker. Since it was the rule of the company that each man must punch out his own card, the foreman asked Bhola to accompany him to the Personnel Director, who interpreted the incident as a direct violation of a rule and gave immediate notice of discharge to both workers. The two workers came to see the Personnel Director on the following day. Nathu claimed innocence on the ground that he had not asked for his card to be punched and did not know at the time that it was being punched. He had been offered a ride by a friend who had already punched out and who could not wait for him to go through the punch-out procedure. Nathu was worried about his wife who was ill at home and was anxious to reach home as quickly as possible. He planned to take his card to the foreman the next morning for reinstatement, a provision sometimes exercised in such cases. These circumstances were verified by Bhola. He claimed that he had punched Nathu’s card the same time he punched his own, not being conscious of any wrongdoing. The Personnel Director was inclined to believe the story of the two men but did not feel he could reverse the action taken. He recognized that these men were good workers and had good records prior to this incident. Nevertheless, they had violated a rule for which the penalty was immediate discharge. He also reminded them that it was the policy of the company to enforce the rules without exception. A few days later the Personnel Director, the Plant Manager, and the Sales Manager sat together at lunch. The Sales Manager reported that he was faced with the necessity of notifying one of their best customers that his order must be delayed because of the liability of one department to conform to schedule. The department in question was the one from which the two workers had been discharged. Not only had it been impossible to replace these men to date, but disgruntlement over the incident had led to significant decline in the cooperation of the other workers. The Personnel Director and the Sales Manager took the position that the discha rge of these two valuable men could have been avoided if there had been provision for onsidering the circumstances of the case. They pointed out that the incident was costly to the company in the possible loss of a customer, in the dissatisfaction within the employee group, and in the time and money that would be involved in recruiting and training replacements. The Plant Manager could not agree with this point of view. â€Å"We must have rules if we are to have efficiency; and the rules are no god unless we enforce them. Furthermore, if we start considering all these variations in circumstances, we will find ourselves loaded down with everybody thinking he is an exception. † He admitted that the grievances were frequent but countered with the point that they could be of little consequence if the contract agreed to by the union was followed to the letter

African Politics No Longer at Ease by Obi Okonkwo Essay

In Africa, the interests of various individuals and groups have transformed the possession of power into nightmarish dimensions due to the flaws in the political structures of the societies. Although some of these degenerative weaknesses have been explained by historical experiences, there still remains the fact that the progressive development of any society depends on a conscious pruning of flawsin the organizational structure of the society by those with the power to provide guidance and direction.
